Samantha waited until she’d nursed Timmy and put him in the cradle for his afternoon nap before she took a deep breath and headed downstairs to talk to Morgan. Since their discussion in the parking lot, she’d thought of nothing else but the stipulations of her grandfather’s will, and the offer Morgan had made to help her meet those terms.

Crossing the great room to the foyer, her legs shook and her insides felt as if they had turned to gelatin. As tempting as it was, she wasn’t going to take him up on his offer. She’d learned the hard way not to rely on a man for anything, and she wasn’t about to start now. Even if it meant giving up on her dream of starting her camp, she just couldn’t do it.

When she reached his office, she took a deep breath and knocked on the frame of the open door. “Are you busy?”

“No.” He smiled. “Come in and sit down.”

She sank into the armchair across from his desk. “I’ve reached a decision.”

His easy expression faded as he cocked one dark brow. “And that would be?”

“I really appreciate your offer to help me keep the land, but I can’t let you put your life on hold for two years,” she said, hurrying to get the words out before she changed her mind.

Rising from the chair, he walked around the desk to sit on the edge in front of her. “Samantha, I wouldn’t consider it as putting my life on hold. I’d think of it more as helping you, as well as a bunch of kids who got handed a raw deal in life.”

Agitated, she stood up to pace. She couldn’t let him sway her. “What if you met someone? You’d be tied to me. What happens then?”

“I won’t meet anyone,” he said, sounding so darned sure that she turned to stare at him.

“You don’t know that, Morgan.”

“Yes, I do,” he said calmly. He crossed his booted feet at the ankles and folded his arms over his wide chest. “You have my word that as long as we’re married, I won’t so much as look at another woman.”

“But the marriage would be in name only,” she said, making sure they had that little detail straight.

He shrugged. “That would probably make things simpler.”

That hadn’t been the answer she’d expected. He was a living, breathing man in his prime. He was going to remain celibate for two years? And how on earth could he be so relaxed about something as important as marriage, even if it wouldn’t be a real one?

“Why are you willing to do this for me, Morgan?” she asked, suddenly suspicious of his motives and why he was being so generous. “What’s in it for you?”

“Nothing,” he said, straightening to his full height. “I just want to see that you and Timmy get what’s rightfully yours. And in the bargain, I’ll be helping kids who really need it.”

“That’s it?” She was having a hard time believing that anyone would be that willing to sacrifice their freedom for someone they barely knew.
